The 2022 National Chess Championship (NCC) is an elite national championship event, featuring the strongest chess players in Nigeria. Over the course of nine rounds, these competitors will battle for the coveted title of 2022 Nigeria Chess Champion, and Nigeria Women Chess Champion. The 2022 championship will be the 2nd edition of an historic event as it is the continuation of the Nigeria Chess Federation partnership with Orchid-Lekki Chess Club.
As it was held last year, the championship will also include FIDE rated Blitz, Opens Section, and Junior Tournaments in order to enable more players participate in the event. In particular, the junior event aims to promote and develop competitive chess among the youths in Nigeria.
The objective of the NCC is primarily to determine the Nigeria National Champion, and the Nigeria Women Chess Champion. However, the inclusion of the other sections (Opens & Juniors) is to expand participation so that players have the opportunity to improve their playing strength and rating.
The total prize money for the entire event is over ₦12,700,000.00
The organizers intend that the event meets international standards in its planning and execution of the tournament, and hope that the event will attract publicity for chess and for the sponsors, and that the players have an overall pleasant experience.
